Item Description: Item Description: Two-door sports car, 289 cubic-inch V-8, 5-speed ZF Transaxle transmission, black with a black interior. The present day collector car market has seen resurgence in the mighty warriors of yesteryear. Most recently, the Charger, the GTO, and the retro-styled Mustang have all become very popular. Perhaps the most exciting legend of this movement has been Ford’s reintroduction of the famous GT 40. In creating this new version, Ford has moved the original version into a class by itself. Offered here is an original copy of the car that made Ford racing famous. Offered here is chassis number P1096, and is the original GT40 known as the MKV. The GT40 MKII and MKIIB were big block 427 cars, and won the prestigious Lemans race in 1966 & 1967. Built by big-block specialists Homan-Moody, they were a thoroughbred racer built for the track and no where else. After their back-to-back stunning wins at Lemans, the rules were changed restricting displacement to just 5.0 liters. It was then that JW automotive was licensed by Ford to continue the GT40 racing campaign, which led to the most successful of all GT40’s ever built; the famous P1075 in the Gulf Oil Orange and blue colors. P1075 used a small block with the original MK1 body, and this resulted in two more LeMans wins in 1968 & 1969. Incredibly, Ford had managed to win Lemans four years in a row. Chassis number P1096 features a galvanized steel monocoque body, which many claim to be one of the best GT40s ever built. It has an identical set of Koni shocks constructed to match the winning specifications of the P1075 LeMans car, which cost an additional $3,800. The entire roof section of the GT40 is made from lightweight steel in order to reduce weight. This GT40 has always been in private hands, and has never been on a race track, which accounts for its excellent condition. The tires are the original equipment tires from the factory, and this GT40 has less than 5,000 actual miles on it. It also features the unique split door feature which allows the roof section of each door to be removed. This outstanding vehicle is presently part of the “Jubilee Classic Collection.” With so few ever built the chance to own a real GT40 is rare as they hardly ever cross the auction block. This unique automobile is literally a piece of history, and it is certainly bound to be the centerpiece of any collection. Estimate: $575,000-625,000 |
